Post Rock Radio V

April 20, 2009

Lots of f**k*n’ fun this week! New Hampshire pop — with an edge, shutterbugs, Woman Year, Get Down Stay Down and Born Ruffians get their little feet all tucked in bed.

Vodpod videos no longer available.

1) Wild Light — California on My Mind

The album is probably negligible, but this single should not be buried in anything. Here’s a rare non-hippy New Hampshire band with Arcade Fire connections. Cool summer tune.

2) Hammer No More the Fingers — Shutterbug

The Triangle has been producing some quality music as of late and Hammer No More the Fingers, is a big part of that. This Chapel Hill three-piece plays classic indie rock with a shimmer of exception shining underneath. Their latest LP is Searching for Bruce. If I can find it (on Churchkey Records), I’m picking it up!

3) Woman Year — Song

Multi-instrumentalists are the new band. This dude classifies himself as emo on his MySpace page. That’s half-right. There’s some weird beats and intriguing lyrics in this exchange he — whoever the hell he is — calls “Song.”

4) Thao with the Get Down Stay Down — Beat, Health, Life and Fire

Thao Nyugen is a sassy singer/songwriter from San Franscisco. Her band has one of the coolest names out there and this is the only other song I’ve heard from them beside “Bag of Hammers” (also recommended). But, I love them and dig the dirty guitar strumming.

5) Born Ruffians — Little Garcon

Probably my favorite band as of right now, Toronto’s Born Ruffians combine handclaps, shouting and melody into something really friggin’ cool.
