Post Rock Radio: Episode 2

March 29, 2009

This week’s edition of Post Rock Radio contains a healthy dose of acoustic pop. Muslims, sideburns, Australians and the semi-mysterious Kinetic Stereokids are all part of the fun that is episode No. 2.

Vodpod videos no longer available.

The Soft Pack hail from San Diego with an edge throwback acousticism that evokes the Violent Femmes (minus the violence). Their Muslims EP features this tune called “Redheaded Girl.” It’s available with one other over at RCRDLBL.com.

Human Highway consists of former Islands and current Canadian dudes Nick Thorburn and Jim Gustrie. Their debut record Moody Motorcycle is full of ghosty strumming and catchy compositions just like “The Sound.”

Angus and Julia Stone was another accidental RCRDLBL discovery. If their first full-length, A Book Like This, sounds anything like “Just A Boy,” it’s probably pretty good.

Elliott Smith’s “Waltz No. 2” off XO, his 1998 LP, just seemed to fit here. But, then again, when doesn’t Elliott Smith sound like a good idea?

I can’t figure out who exactly the Kinetic Stereokids are or where they come from, but I dig their Beasties-style beat rock. These mysterious Midwesterners put out an album called Kid Moves a few weeks ago. I might go buy it just for kicks.

By the way, for those budding Post Rock fans who wondered why the hell I didn’t post links for last week’s playlist, try these:

Albert Hammond Jr. – Gfc
tUnE-yArDs – Sunlight
Family Fiction – When She’s Near
