I ♥ The Thermals

February 26, 2009

The Thermals are one of the most exciting bands you’ve never heard, but their sound is very familiar.

At first, their distorted ramblings reminded me of the Pixies. They still do, but three albums in, the Thermals have a hell of a lot more to show us.

The Body, The Blood, The Machine was a magnificent concept album from a band you never thought would make one. Now I expect brilliance and this single from their upcoming Kill Rock Stars debut certainly satisfies.

See it?

See it?

As with their More Parts Per Million, the band’s first full-length, the lyrics are littered with alliteration and lengthy declarations.

“Everything Thermals/Straight from the pages of your journal/I know no one’s ever seen it/The Thermals know all your secrets,” they sang in “Everything Thermals,” the exclamation point on the bands debut EP.

That was silly. A half-dozen years later, the Thermals have retained the fun (“oh-way-oh-woah”), but added some cryptic chops. “Now We Can See” feels like an epilogue to Body with its references to roaming the desert and enemies lying dead on the ground.

“Now we can see/The warnings and the signs/Reading between the lines/Like writing on the wall.” Put that to handclaps and you’ve got yourself an exciting preview for the next full-length. And the next. And the next.
